4M40 radiator hoses very hard.

Greetings,

I have recently replaced my cylinder head with an AMC unit on my 4m40 Rodeo.I drove from JHB to the Waterburg over the weekend(300km).When I got there I opened bonnet to inspect radiator header tank.Level was slightly above the line(20mm) and no bubbles. It was cooling fine and seemed normal, apart from radiator hoses being very hard.

Upon returning to JHB yesterdayI noticed that the header tank was nearly full(no bubbles). This morning when I checked it cold, the water in header tank had not pulled back into radiator.I blew it back into radiator from header tank. There was no water loss. Also, the radiator hoses were rock hard.I am using a 1.1 bar cap.Is it normal for the hoses to be very hard?I do realise it is a pressurised system, but these really felt hard.

When I torqued the head down,I went 50 nm in sequence and then 90 + 90 deg.I did not first torque it down 100nm to 'load' the gasket and then loosen bolts and then go 50 nm + 90 + 90 deg.

I am starting to wonder whether or not my head gasket is sealing properly or if there is some blow by into the water jackets??I did have boost on turbo increased from .5 bar to 1 bar.Maybe this is the cause?

Also, when i started the vehicle this morning, the idle was higher than normal with more diesel knock than normal(bearing in mind that the pump was also fiddled with by people who did dyno and increase turbo boost). She is also smoking like a steam loco.

During normal town driving my header tank level remains normal. The long haul back from Waterberg under load pushed the level very high but not overflowing.

Any comments or advise on a way forward would be much appreciated!

4M40 head and timing parts.

Greetings,

I have a cylinder head(cracked),but internals are good.I also have diesel pump timing gear, idler gear + other which are still in fine condition(+ chain tensioner). They were replaced due to the comprehensive nature of the timing chain kit that I bought.

I am in Jhb.If anyone is interested in these spares, please pm me.

4M40 upgraded timing chain kit.

Greetings,

I have a 2003 Rodeo 4x4 with the single row timing chain.I will be replacing the cylinder head next week and think it prudent to replace the timing chain while I am at it.

I have heard mention that some of the 4M4O motors came out with a double row timing chain. Is there a conversion kit on the market with a double chain(that comes with double row sprockets on the crank and camshaft).

I see that there is room on the tensioner guide to accomodate another row as the existing single chain only accomodates half of the width of tensioner.

Some input by fellow members would be highly appreciated!

Looking for quality head 4M4O

Greetings,

I am looking for a complete cylinder head for a 4M40,pref AMC or any other reputable make in the JHB area.

I have been quoted R3,8k by Components for Africa and R6k by Alert Engine Spares. What worries me is that neither companies can tell me what make it is,even though they offer a 12 month guarantee.Stealers extorting R13k for bare head.

Any assistance will be greatly valued!

Cracked exhaust manifold 2.8tdi

I forgot to mention that upon stripping my head,I noticed that the exhaust manifold has a prominent crack on it.I was wondering if I could weld this as a new exhaust manifold costs R2k at the stealers and they seem to be the only people who sell them?

Does anyone know some tricks?

Does anyone make an aftermarket manifold?

Head Bolts 2.8 tdi.

Greetings,

Took my head off today and to the head testing people as my radiator hoses were rock hard and coolant pissing out of reservoir and bubbling.

After head gasket inspection, engineer reckons it is blown.I hope he is correct and the pressure test on the head concurs.

My question:When I replace head, must I use new bolts or can I reuse the originals. Not sure if they are stretchies or not?

Best regards,

Colt 2.8tdi low mileage import motors

Greetings,

Does anyone know of a reputable dealer who sells low mileage complete engines in the JHB area?

I have heard that some of the people who sell these motors claim that they are low mileage, but they are in fact the dreggs of the barrel and totally poked!

the motor that I am looking for is Colt 2.8tdi 4M4O.

Best regards,
TAM.
